Doug is a coming of age nicktoon that is so relatable it is set in your very own childhood and teenage years. Doug’s titular character is Doug Funnie, an average young kid that has all the troubles of a teenage wannabe and the imagination of someone barely out of grade school. Doug Funnie even has a superhero alter ego oddly named Quail Man. He even gets his dog Pork Chop into the act naming him Quail Dog.

Doug’s best friend is Skeeter he is colored blue and he always supports his friend. His real name is even weirder than his nickname. it’s Mosquito.

Roger Klotz is Doug’s rival in school. Everyone’s got to have a rival and Doug certainly picked the best of them. Roger is also the resident school bully by the way.

Patti Mayonnaise is Doug’s dream girl. She somehow is always mentioned in a sentence by Doug. This uncertain relationship non relationship status they have with each other is what really hits home for me. It is just so real that you can touch it. Even after the series is finished their relationship status is not really certain maybe it’s because Doug always gets cold feet.- but that’s growing up.

Legends of the Hidden Temple Kirk Fogg and Olmec

Legends of the Hidden Temple is the name of a kids’ television game show that was part of a bunch of famous old Nickelodeon shows. The most prominent feature of this game show was a sentient tribal giant head statue named- Olmec. (The word “olmec” is actually the word referring to giant head statues) Olmec actually opens the show and refers to Kirk Fogg as the “guide”.

6 teams named after a color and an animal compete to retrieve the hidden treasure  for each episode and only those teams who complete the task of the round may be able to advance to the next round.

The 6 teams are as follows: Red Jaguars, Blue Barracudas, Green Monkeys, Orange Iguanas, Purple Parrots and the  Silver Snakes

In the first round the 6 teams attempt to cross the moat which separates the teams from the actual temple. So even before setting foot on the temple 2 teams are already cut from the roster since only 4 get to advanced to the 2nd stage.

The next round is a question and answer round wherein Olmec tells the story of the hidden treasure of the episode and after which he would ask them some multiple choice questions. The 4 teams are situated on the top of  3 steps and each correctly answered question would allow the team to step down 1 step. The 1st 2 teams to step down the 3 steps would go to the next round.

The 3rd round will then be a showdown between the two teams each competing identical events simultaneously and the winning team will be awarded Pendants of Life corresponding to how many events they win. The team to win this round then gets the right to enter Olmec’s temple in search for the hidden treasure.

The 4th round is the last round of this great old nickelodeon game show.  It is a round that is set inside the temple and now instead of facing other teams, the team now races against time and faces off against temple guards. Only a Pendant of Life will allow a player to continue unharmed when confronted by a temple guard. If the team can return back to the gate with the treasure in hand within 3 minutes then they win the grand prize.

Old Nickelodeon Shows : Game Shows – GUTS

DO YOU HAVE IT? GUTS!!!  This is the question we are asked before we are allowed to enter the Extreme Arena.  Once you’re in, you are not allowed to wimp out.

GUTS is one of the only 2 titles of the old Nickelodeon shows that test the contestants’ physical skills. The other game show is the Legends of the Hidden Temple.

It is obvious that GUTS was heavily inspired by american gladiators but they added a few changes to the format to make it more kid friendly –  and I use the the term “friendly” loosely. Contestants are pitted against each other in a competition of strength, endurance and agility and unlike American Gladiator where contestants compete against gladiators, in GUTS the contestants only compete with each other and instead of gladiators inside the field or the arena with them, they have “umpires” and “crew men” or “spotters” who help out every time there is a snag with one of the stunts. So Nickelodeon GUTS really does apply all the necessary safeguards to make this intense physical competition as safe for the teenage participants as ever.

The Extreme Arena is  a modified sports complex that features extreme versions of sports and obstacles. Each event awards points according to what place the team gets and at the end of each competition day or episode the teams battle it out on the MEGA CRAG a.k.a AGGRO CRAG or the SUPER AGGRO CRAG! The CRAG is a mountain of obstacles built right smack in the middle of the Extreme Arena. It is a tower of pain but if you conquer it, it will also be your tower of glory.

GUTS is hosted by the football jersey wearing Mike O’malley and the beautiful British narrator and referee Moira Quirk.

Old Nickelodeon Shows, Figure it Out, Summer Sanders gets slimed

Figure it Out is a game show where in a contestant gets the chance to win cool prizes, but there’s a catch- the contestant needs to be the best or inventor of something. In an episode of Figure it Out, the contestant gets to sit with the host,Summer Sanders in front of a panel of old nickelodeon shows fame trying to figure out what the contestant has done, won, invented or is good at.

When a panel member -usually it’s Danny Tamberelli (Little Pete)- does the “secret slime action” then the said nickelodeon star gets slimed. Every time the panel gets slimed an audience member gets to win a Figure it Out prize. If they are lucky they also get slimed care of a hair whip from Danny Tamberelli or Lori Beth Denberg.

Billy the Answer Head is the game board on which the achievement of the contestant is written on. They are all flipped over of course to hide the answer from the panelists. Figure it Out is divided into 3 rounds and each round the  panelists are stumped the contestant gets to win a cool prize. one of the better prizes i could remember was a Nintendo 64 game console. Sometimes the panel is given a hint via charades by the Charade Brigade. The contestant at this point need not worry because most of the panels really try their hardest not to get the clues and the answers right.  Nickelodeon after all aims to make kids happy.

Ren and Stimpy, nicktoons, old nickelodeon shows

Ren and Stimpy is the name of the cult cartoon hit of the 90s that was one of the best programs to ever hit the list of the old nickelodeon shows.

Ren and Stimpy were also the names of the title characters a neurotic and bordering on psychopathic chihuahua (Ren) and a simple minded cat (Stimpy). I really didn’t see how Stimpy could’ve been a cat. Honestly even now with my much more artistically discerning eye i could never guess that Stimpy is a cat had it not been for an episode that explicitly states that he is in fact a cat.

This nicktoon really appeals to the younger audience for its slapstick based humor and over the top animation and it also appeals to older teens and adults for its much more mature and sometimes more immature undertones.

Hey Arnold is a show that was popular in the good old days of the 90s. This show was set in a fictional city that is really similar to New York. The characters are the group of friends at P.S. 118. Arnold is not the leader of the group but his mysterious and suave ways make him everyone’s friend.

Arnold lives in an apartment building owned by his grand parents. The people in this apartment building, not to mention his grand parents, are the weirdest and the most real characterization of humanity ever in the history of the old nickelodeon shows.

Visually this nicktoon was involved in a successful experiment. This is the only nicktoon that modelled their main characters after common day to day things like, a football (Arnold), an open tin can (gerald) and a broom (Helga).

The show is set in their own little chunk of life their own block in the city. The shows main theme is one of being a child and experiencing the joys and sometimes aches of being a child growing up.

The Angry Beavers, Norb and Dag

The Angry Beavers is really a misnomer of sorts because the beavers here are not as angry as they are advertised. This nicktoon follows two beaver brothers, Norbert and Daggett – or Norb and Dag for short- in their adventure laden days together in their pond and their dam.

These two young beavers are as dissimilar as a sharpened pencil and a large bucket of water. Norb is the sharper of the two beavers and some episodes even showing him having a secret lab of his own. Dag is the simpler of the two beavers but still there are times when you wonder if he really is that dull- because he is able to accomplish some things that are still too complicated for a simpleton such as himself.

Even if the two brothers are not on the same intellectual level they do have many things in common, such as their love for the superhero theatrics. They even have their superhero alter egos –  Muscular Beaver (Dag) and Baron Bad Beaver (Norb). They also have the penchant for the old science fiction movies that star their favorite actor Oxnard Montalvo.

These beavers are certainly not as angry as the title would suggest but they certainly are as human as you or me.

Aaah! Real Monsters, Oblina, Ickis, Kromm

Of all the old Nickelodeon shows Aaah! Real Monsters is the only Nicktoon that succeeds in making kids like monsters instead of making kids fear them- not that all the other nicktoons make it their mission to make monsters seem extremely scary. The cartoon centers on the antics of 3 young monster students who live under a mountain of junk.

Ickis is the red rabbit eared guy that who is stronger than he looks. He is the leader of the trio but he is far from being level headed. His monster tactics range from just plain surprise attacks to his all powerful “looming” power which makes him grow to as much as more than 10 x his original size.

Oblina’s russian sounding name isn’t an indication of her looks. She is a  tube like monster that is sometimes mistaken for a striped umbrella or a very ugly sugar cane. Her grotesquely huge lips are her best assets for scaring for they hide beneath them an assortment of killer teeth and fangs.

Kromm looks almost human. His figure is that of a short pudgy human being just without the head. He carries his eyes with him but what makes him scary is his powerful stench. His stench is his greatest weapon in scaring the living daylights out of humans.

These monster kids are training to become top monster scarers, because this is what monsters obviously live for- scaring humans silly. They are taught the basics of scaring in an academy that is run by a monster veteran named Gromble. Gromble is shown as this monster hero and role model who knows what is what in the monster world. Students fear and respect him but when they don’t he isn’t one to be stingy in giving out snorching to keep young monsters in line.

This cartoon had to be the most dramatic in terms of cinematography for any nicktoon since almost all of the episodes of Aaah! Real Monsters was set in night time. I commend their artistic approach to story telling.

Rocko's Modern Life, Rocko, Filburt, Heffer, Spunky, Ed Bighead, Bev bighead

‘If you want off beat comedy from an intelligent cartoon then you’re in for a treat with Rocko’s Modern Life. Rocko’s  Modern Life is an nicktoon that was one of the greatest old nickelodeon shows of all time.

The show works on many levels. It works with the purely childish humor and wit much like how old slapsticks classics of old work but the show also works on a deeper more intellectual level. Maybe i’m just reading too much into the show but it really does have that artsy fartsy thing going on making a comment on society and all.

The show features a group of friends with the titular Rocko in the center. Rocko is a an out of place wallaby with a slightly more out of place Australian accent in a modern U.S of A setting- er- representation of America. (a wallaby is a marsupial that hails from Australia- looks sort of like a little kangaroo)

The other members of this group are a cow – well a bull if you want to be specific- named Heffer Wolfe. (a heifer pronounced “heffer” is actually what a young cow is called.) Heffer is a young bull that was adopted by a wolf family as  a meal but soon was raised as one of their own because of his lovable nature.

Then we have Filburt Turtle or sometimes referred to as Filbert Shellbach. As you would’ve probably guessed Filburt (I like the “u” spelling) is a turtle. In keeping with a turtles obvious self protecting nature, Filburt is depicted as being neurotic. This young turtle doesn’t want to try new stuff and is always afraid of being hurt or of getting germs and viruses. Well, being friends with Heffer, his fears are certainly warranted. Filburt is often heard repeating his famous mantra “I’m nauseous.”- which is actually a grammatical errorr- a better statement would’ve been- “I’m nauseated.”.

The list of shenanigans Kenan and Kel have been in involved in range from innocent misunderstandings with with local shoppers in the convenience store they work at to as serious as a highly publicized case against a tuna canning company after they find a screw inside a tuna can they opened.
